2014 Newport County Championship Report

The Newport County Championship, a meet founded on a simple ideal that has guided runners for generations, run fast, free shirt. The meet was a PR-paloza for the boys team in every section of the track and the multiple fields us descendants of ancient Greek athletics like to throw and jump over stuff in. The Little Compton Cannonball Nick Scott busted through the hull of yet another enemy pirate ship plundering his way to a PR in the 400 clocking in at 58.4. John "Safe From The Wrath Of John Oppel Because He Learned His Place" Futoma nabbed a PR in the 200 of 24.2. Meanwhile in the world of Jet Ponies, Jet Ponies Brandon Cawley and Will "One First Name Isn't Enough" Greg trotted their way to 15 second PR's in ironically the 1500 coming in at 5:14 and 5:24 respectively. Fellow Jet Ponies (I'm not even close to sure how this Jet Pony thing came about) Nick "The Frisbee Bearer" Donahue and Adam Gamache went home to the stables with respective PR's of 2:37 and 2:41 in the 800. Utility Captain Alex "So Many Name Options I Can't Think Of Just One" Eyster came out the 300 hurdlers old folks home ending a year long hiatus in the event winning with a time of 45.3, loving the hurdles he also made his debut in the 110 hurdles running a PR (shocker of the day) of 19.5. Birthday boy Mike Carson not wanting to be left out of the hurdling fun joined Alex in the PR plains running a 110 hurdles best of 19.9. To close the track section of the meet Jackson "Trackson" Reaper and Legacy of Speed Matt Corbett who already doubled joined Alex "Must Be Tired Be Now" Eyster who had tripled and myself for a seasonal best 4X400 of 3:52.4. This really yielded 3 PR's, a 59.8 for Jackson, a 58.8 for Matt and a 58.7 for me and my recently befriended groin. Congratulations also go out to Jackson Reaper for running and creating the school record in the newly created 3400 meter run. On the field side things were thrown well. In the Javelin Max "Hundo Club" Peckham and Ben Steen threw for personal bests of 107-07 and 100-09. In the Vinyl record throw future Clippers owner Kenny Johnson and future Clippers fan Nick Digennaro threw for 102-01 and 74-03.
To conclude the meet we were all gathered on the field, elementary school story time style and many of us received T-Shirt sized ribbons of blue, red and green. Winning MVP of the track for girls was Greta Scott who sped her way to victories in the 4x100, 100 and 200, after all that running she decided to take a dip in a sand box which conveniently won her the long jump. Winning MVP on the field side was Abby "Good At Chucking Things" Cousens who threw her way to a shiny gold looking trophy with victories in the Pole Vault, Discus, Hammer and a 3rd place finish in the Shot.

2014 Classical Classic ReportĀ

Hello I welcome you to the first of hopefully many posts by me, Jake Elmslie on behalf of the Portsmouth Track and Field organization. The majority of this who would be reading know me and if you do not it is not a painstaking task to find me so with that in mind I'll leave the bio for a later installment. With that I move on to a report and if I feel smart in the midst of writing this analysis on the boys performances in the Classic Classical Classic that occurred in the year 2014. The meet opened with a 4x800 that not even self obsessed ESPN reporter could of predicted. Child of Wonder Patrick "Hoo" Hook opened the event with a performance that took expectations and catapulted them across the Himalayas running a 2:03.8 that left the other runners with a scorching ring that was once a track to run around. The Legacy of Speed Matthew Corbett followed that up with a brisk little jaunt continuing his comeback season with a personal best of 2:08.7. Jackson "Trackson" Reaper not wanting to let his comrades efforts go to waste took to the oval and ran a personal best of 2:14.5, Jackson later decided that one PR wasn't enough to curb his hunger for achievement and bread, much later in the day running a 10:03.1 in his personal favorite the 3000. Finally rookie sensation Spencer Wallace, filling in for myself while me and my groin finalize contract negotiations wrapped up the relay with a pretty bow, edging East Providence out of 3rd place by a fraction of a second with a time of 2:14.3. Reports indicate that while receiving their rewards a member of the EP relay team was quoted as saying "I hate you guys". The guys finished with a final time of 8:41.6 ranking them 13th in the state, one spot away from qualifying for the state meet, for now.
Later in the meet Little Compton Cannonball Nick Scott ran himself a PR in the 100 meter dash, barreling in at 12.5 seconds.
John "Is Going To Get Whooped At 7PM" Futoma furthered the fear running a 400 against him instills in the heart of whomever running a blazing 53.1 turning that still scorching ring pat had left into a pool of lava ensuring that Mt. Pleasant will be joining us in the no track club.
